Today, on my last day of my 30s, I found myself having a moment that I was not expecting, that I thought I'd share.
Some of you may think that today is my birthday since today is day 40 of my 40 Days to 40, but my birthday is actually tomorrow. So day 40 is, in fact, the last day of my 30s. I can't say it was a miscalculation per se - it was something of a choice.

The Day's EndAfter a long day, which involved a playdate for my son, swimming at my dad's pool, and dinner out with my dad, we arrived at home at 8:15 pm with two very tired children. And it was my turn to put them to bed.
My husband and I sometimes argue about whose turn it is to put them to bed mostly because the five minutes that it takes to get them upstairs and begin the bedtime routine is not the part of the day you tell your friends without children about. But after those five minutes, getting them into their pjs, getting them to brush and floss their teeth and reading two stories (they each pick one) - well, that's still not my favourite time. Lately, my son's just trying to bug his sister all the time and that includes during teeth brushing and story time. But after all those things are over, then I sing to them. And that is one of my favourite times of the day. I suffer from insomnia - and suffer is the exact right word here, as anyone with insomnia knows. It comes and goes and sometimes it's worse than others. I've tried all the over the counter medications, which keep me awake BTW. And I've tried a few under the counter (?) medications as well, which also keep me awake or just make me feel out of it.
When I'm having a really bad bout of it, which I have been having for about two weeks now, I do have one foolproof cure. His name is Lester Ponce and his company is called Corpus Sanus. He's pretty much my doctor, since I haven't seen an MD in quite some time and I see Lester 6 to 12 times a year. He's cured me of things ranging from sprained ankles, parasites, food sensitivities and allergies, and physical injuries. My dad calls him our "voodoo" doctor - only because it's really difficult to describe what he does. I've said before that being a parent is not a glamorous job. But it can be a lot of fun. In fact, a big part of parenting and getting through the mundane parts of it, in my opinion, is amusing yourself - even if the kids aren't in on the joke. I love it when my kids ask me huge existential or philosophical questions without realizing it.
Today, for instance, on a three-hour drive to a cottage, my daughter asked me, "Are we here?" I, of course, responded "Yes, in fact, we are here. We are always right here." She totally didn't get it, nor did my son. So she asked again, "Are we here yet?" I answered her "Well, now that you mention it. I'm not really sure. I suppose the question is really 'do you believe we are here?' and 'how could we possibly tell if we here or not?'" It went on like this for a while. You probably think that I eventually answered the question which I knew she had been asking. The answer would have been "No we aren't there yet - we just pulled out of our driveway." (I'm not kidding about that.) Eventually she got bored of my silly answers so she stopped asking. I should really explain to here the difference between "here" and "there." The PlanA few weeks ago I suggested to my kids that we plan an epic day before the summer ended. We could do anything they wanted. The final decision was a trip to Legoland - a place where, surprisingly, we had never been before. Admittedly, my kids hadn't heard of it because I had purposely not told them about it. Does that make me a terrible parent? The Build-UpOn the 40-minute drive to Legoland, I could see that my kids were excited, especially my son, and I started to worry that the build-up to our epic day would not live up to the day itself.
Today I went to my favourite healthy restaurant in Toronto and met three friends and former colleagues. The restaurant used to be named Juice for Life but changed it to Fresh - probably because people thought that it was just a juice bar. I never get to go there because there isn't one in my neighbourhood and my husband has never liked the food. He doesn't go for that super healthy, vegetarian, wheat-free, dairy-free thing.
I Never Met a Trampoline I Didn't LikeJust like when I was a kid, my kids love to jump on a trampoline. We have a small one in our living room and there's this very cool place, Sky Zone, that has a lot of trampolines, a strip of trampoline leading up to a basketball net and a pit of foam cubes that you can jump in from - you guessed it - trampolines. Aerobics on a Trampoline?Sky Zone also has trampoline exercise classes for adults, which they call "SkyRobics." So this evening, at 7:00 pm, I went with my BF to my first trampoline aerobics class.
We were both really excited. I grew up with a big trampoline in my backyard so I was ready to do some serious jumping. Today I was extremely excited for my activity du jour. I'm not sure why it hadn't happened before but it took this little project to set it in motion so that's one more wonderful thing to come out of it. The CallAt 3:15 pm this afternoon, I placed a group Skype video call to three of my favourite women. They're friends from university, which means that I've known them for 20 years now. Wow - that makes me feel old!
Girls' Night at age 39.99 looks very different than it did 10 years ago. Now it's a bit more mellow and there's far less tequila involved - and my mom was there.
Last night I met a few of my favourite people - my oldest and bestest friend, a relatively new but totally awesome friend and my mom - in Dundas Square. No - I did not eat dinner at 5:00 pm today. I woke up really early (actually I didn't sleep last night - so I guess I just got up early). It was 6:00 am when I finally dressed and tried to creep out of the hotel room to watch the sun rise.
Still being up north on vacation and being directionally challenged, I asked the lady at the front desk which direction was east. We discussed amongst ourselves and decided on a direction. I then waled around Blue Mountain Village looking for a good spot to watch the sum come up. Never mind the sunrise - the walk around the pond with not a single person around, no store open, just after a rainfall was so peaceful. I almost forgot about the sun. |
