The Plan

A few weeks ago I suggested to my kids that we plan an epic day before the summer ended. We could do anything they wanted. The final decision was a trip to Legoland - a place where, surprisingly, we had never been before. Admittedly, my kids hadn't heard of it because I had purposely not told them about it. Does that make me a terrible parent?
The Build-Up
On the 40-minute drive to Legoland, I could see that my kids were excited, especially my son, and I started to worry that the build-up to our epic day would not live up to the day itself.
The Day
OK - Legoland is awesome! Well, for kids who love Lego and are between the ages of about 3 and 7.
My kids love both regular-sized Lego and Duplo, and Legoland did a great job of accentuating all the wonderfulness of Lego and adding a lot of other fun things.
There was a ride where we rode in a small car and shot at various Lego bad guys, each accruing point so that there was a winner - the person who had shot the most bad guys. A play area where adults aren't allowed (thanks for that Legoland!!). And of course lots and lots of small and large Lego. Oh - and the awesome 4D movie theatre, where the Lego character shoots a water hose in the movie and the audience gets wet (just a light spray) and cars race around a desert and we felt the wind. The movies are only 10 minutes long - so we went twice.

My Only Complaint

My only complaint is the complaint that I have with Lego in general. The "Friends" line of Lego. All the characters are girls. It's all pink and purple. There are no cool vehicles or superheroes, but instead have flowers and dog houses. In short, it's the one and only girls line. All the other lines - Ninjago, Superheroes, Chima, Star Wars etc - are very obviously geared towards boys and have few if any female characters.
What is up with that Lego? My daughter loves Lego and all the war/fighting stuff that my son has introduced her too, but she also loves purple, so is naturally drawn to the packaging of the Friends line.

OK My Last Complaint

This complaint is one that I have with all museums, zoos, aquariums (any attraction really). Anyone else hate the fact that when leaving the attraction, instead of just walking through an exit, you are now FORCED to walk through the store? And I'm sure you can imagine the store at the exit of Legoland. How could you possibly say no to buying your kid, who you brought to Legoland because he/she obviously likes Lego (I mean - who would bring a kid that doesn't like Lego to Legoland?), a Lego set on your way out?
Luckily I had told the kids it was going to be an epic day - so I was absolutely going to buy them a Lego set.

How Do You End an Epic Day?
With Chinese food, popsicles AND ice cream with their beloved oupa, ouma, aunty and daddy.
My son fell asleep on the car ride home - only after saying that he had such a great time today that he wished he could press the restart button on today and discussing, in detail, the second annual Epic Day of Summer.
I guess I didn't need to worry about the build-up. The day was truly EPIC!
