Today I was extremely excited for my activity du jour. I'm not sure why it hadn't happened before but it took this little project to set it in motion so that's one more wonderful thing to come out of it.
The Call
At 3:15 pm this afternoon, I placed a group Skype video call to three of my favourite women. They're friends from university, which means that I've known them for 20 years now. Wow - that makes me feel old!
I thought about naming this post "I'll Be There for You" because it's also a song about friendship, and it is the theme song for Friends, which we watched together, along with 90210 and ER, every Thursday night at their apartment along with several other girlfriends and some sorbet. There was always sorbet.
The Timing
It was at 3:15 pm so that it wouldn't be too late in England but late enough to be after work and her daughter's bedtime. And 12:15 pm in BC with the hopes that one or two of her kids would be napping. And 3:15 pm in New York with the hopes that her one or two would also be napping. I guess it's not surprising that it hadn't happened before.
The Reality
It was so great to see the three of them in one place, even if it was on a screen, and one kept disappearing to deal with crying and hungry children and another was hiding in a small closet/office space so she wouldn't wake her sleeping children. Being a mom is such a glamorous career!
We talked for over an hour. Skype cut us off a few times. People left and came back. But like the weeks and months at a time that I may not have been in touch with these friends over the years, we picked up right where we left off - talking about our lives, our kids, our selves.
And making some plans to talk and see each other soon. We already have another Skype chat set up for next month and are hoping for some actual face time next year.
Kenny Rogers was absolutely right - you can't make old friends.
So that makes me extra lucky to have such great ones.
