The only painting that I've done in the past 20 years has been with my kids. And usually I'm the one cleaning the paint off various surfaces (floor, ceiling, face etc) as opposed to applying it to paper, let alone a canvas.
I've come to see myself as a creative person but not really visually creative. In spite of this, I went to a painting class at this very cool place, the Paintlounge.

They offer all kinds of classes and events and cater to painters of all levels, including total newbies like me. The class was 2 hours, although I was done about 30 minutes early, and focused on creating a cherry blossoms painting.
There was a cherry blossoms painting already done by somebody at the Paintlounge and the teacher showed us how to go about creating something similar. We covered mixing colours and creating the background, how to do different kinds of paint strokes, the cherry blossoms themselves and their branches.

It was so easy - only slightly harder than paint by numbers. It was infinitely more satisfying than paint by numbers though since I did create something from scratch. And mine ended up very different than the original painting and felt much more my style.
I really enjoyed mixing the colours and doing the background and the branches but found I had a hard time deciding where the blossoms should go. For some reason I just couldn't decide and ended up going with a more sparse look than the original.

While I was waiting for the paint to dry (literally!), I sipped the most delicious berry rooibos tea with added goji berries and a fancy chocolate-covered Oreo. I mean, these Paintlounge people know what they're doing!
I had a really fun time flexing some different creative muscles. And I have something new to put up in my daughter's bedroom.
